PMSG Hormone, commonly used in conjunction with progestogens, is a well-known hormonal treatment that helps increase ovulation before artificial insemination. It is derived from the serum of pregnant mares and is composed of an alpha subunit and a beta subunit. PMSG is produced by endometrial cups in the mare's uterus between 40 and 130 days of pregnancy. This hormone can be extracted and used to induce estrus in female animals by stimulating the growth of ovarian follicles and promoting ovulation. Its bioactivity lasts for approximately four days in species other than horses. However, the prolonged biological activity of PMSG may lead to ovarian stimulation and cystic ovarian disease, as well as decreased hormone clearance due to sugar molecules. Despite these drawbacks, PMSG is preferred over other pituitary hormones due to its longer half-life in the bloodstream. While primarily exerting luteinizing hormone-like activity, PMSG also exhibits follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone-like activity in other animal species.
