PAP

Alternative Names: Not Available

Prostatic acid phosphatase (PAP) is an enzyme produced by the prostate and its levels may be elevated in men with prostate cancer. PAP is believed to play a role in the liquefaction of semen. Metastasized prostate cancer typically has the highest levels of PAP. Diseases such as Paget's disease, hyperparathyroidism, sickle-cell disease, multiple myeloma, or Gaucher's disease may also show moderately higher PAP levels. Temporary changes in PAP levels can be caused by certain medications. Manipulation of the prostate gland through procedures like rectal exams, biopsies, or massages can also increase PAP levels.

Product Description

Human Prostate Acid Phosphatase (HPAP) is an enzyme predominantly expressed in the prostate gland. Belonging to the family of acid phosphatases, HPAP plays a significant role in the hydrolysis of phosphomonoesters under acidic conditions. With a molecular weight of approximately 45 kDa, HPAP is involved in various physiological processes related to prostate function. Its expression and activity levels have been studied extensively in the context of prostate cancer diagnosis and prognosis. Understanding the biochemical properties and functions of HPAP contributes to the broader comprehension of prostate physiology and the development of potential therapeutic strategies.
