L-Asparaginase

Alternative Names: Not Available

L-Asparaginase is an enzyme derived from E.coli that inhibits the growth of cancer cells by depleting the important nutrient L-Asparagine. It is primarily used to induce remission in acute lymphoblastic leukemia. In multiple myeloma, where malignant B cells originate from lymph nodes, L-Asparagine is crucial for cell metabolism, making L-Asparaginase a potential treatment for the disease. The rationale behind using asparaginase is that leukemic cells rely on circulating asparagine, which they are unable to synthesize, while normal cells can produce their own asparagine. Asparaginase converts L-asparagine to aspartic acid and ammonia, starving the leukemic cell of circulating asparagine.

Product Description

L-Asparaginase is an enzyme that plays a significant role in cancer treatment by depleting the levels of asparagine, an amino acid essential for tumor cell growth. Belonging to the amidohydrolase family, this enzyme catalyzes the hydrolysis of L-asparagine into L-aspartic acid and ammonia. With a molecular weight of approximately 34 kDa, L-Asparaginase has been widely studied for its therapeutic potential in various malignancies. Its mechanism of action involves depriving cancer cells of asparagine, consequently inhibiting their proliferation and inducing cell death.
