FETUB

Alternative Names: Fetuin-B, Fetuin-like protein IRL685, FETUB, Gugu, IRL685, 16G2.

Fetuin-B (FETUB) is a protein that belongs to the fetuin family, which is part of the cystatin superfamily proteins. It consists of 2 cystatin domains and is found in the serum. Fetuin-B is expressed in the liver, tongue, and placenta. Its main function is to regulate osteogenesis by inhibiting mineralization. Fetuins, in general, have various roles including involvement in bone formation and breakdown, regulation of hepatocyte growth factor receptors, and response to systemic inflammation. FETUB also plays a role in oocyte maturation by preventing premature hardening of the zona pellucida before fertilization. This is likely achieved by inhibiting the protease activity of ASTL, which is responsible for the cleavage of ZP2 and triggering zona pellucida hardening.
