FABP4 - Human

Alternative Names: Fatty acid-binding protein adipocyte, Fatty acid-binding protein 4, Adipocyte lipid-binding protein, AFABP, ALBP, A-FABP, FABP4.

Adipocyte FABP4 is a small protein that belongs to the FABP family. It has the ability to bind fatty acids and similar compounds within its internal cavity. FABP4 is only expressed in mature adipocytes and plays an important role in regulating the function of these cells. In mice, mutations in FABP4 have been shown to protect against insulin resistance in the presence of both dietary and genetic obesity. FABP4-deficient mice also have decreased lipid breakdown and improved dyslipidemia. Recent studies have found that FABP4 is also expressed in macrophages and is involved in regulating inflammatory responses and cholesterol accumulation. When FABP4 is absent in these cells, it provides significant protection against atherosclerosis. These findings suggest that FABP4 plays a central role in the development of metabolic syndrome by acting in both adipocytes and macrophages.

Product Description

Human Fatty Acid Binding Protein-4 (FABP4), also known as adipocyte protein 2 (aP2), is a member of the fatty acid binding protein (FABP) family. FABP4 is a small cytoplasmic protein that plays a role in the transport and metabolism of fatty acids within adipocytes and macrophages. It has a molecular weight of approximately 15 kDa. FABP4 is involved in various physiological processes, including lipid homeostasis, insulin sensitivity, and inflammation, making it a subject of interest in the study of metabolic disorders such as obesity and diabetes.
