Adiponectin, a hormone produced by adipose tissue, has been shown in multiple studies to possess anti-diabetic, anti-atherogenic, and anti-inflammatory properties. This hormone, also known as APM-1, plays a role in increasing insulin sensitivity in skeletal muscle, reducing hepatic lipogenesis and gluconeogenesis, regulating nitric oxide production in endothelial cells, inhibiting smooth muscle cell proliferation, and preventing lipid accumulation in macrophages. Circulating Adiponectin exists in three different oligomeric complexes: high molecular weight (HMW), middle molecular weight (MMW or hexamer), and low molecular weight (MMW or trimer) forms. Each of these complexes activates different signaling pathways and exerts distinct functions.
